Introduction to Business Continuity Management (BCM) All 5 days

This workshop is essential for anyone who wants to gain a greater understanding of Business Continuity Management (BCM), and the initial building blocks necessary to deliver workable plans. It transfers to delegates an understanding of the main Business Continuity (BC) components and management best practice, whilst gaining insights into the delivery of effective BC Programme Management.

This is a practical workshop that provides delegates with a framework that is aligned with the ISO requirements. It includes specific templates for Business Impact Analysis (BIA), BC Planning and Exercising that delegates will be able to take away for use in their own organisations.

It incorporates elements that bring to life BCM using tried and tested processes & procedures that are needed to deliver effective planning.

Day 1 – BCM Programme Initiation

This day will cover the setting-up of a Business Continuity Programme or Project within scope, time limits and budgetary constraints, based upon real life practical experience and agreed best practices.

It will address all of the related topics, including:

  • Defining the Need – Top management commitment, programme scoping, objectives, policies and external requirements;
  • Developing awareness - Recognising the “risk appetite”, benefits, and gaining commitment;
  • Budgetary requirements - Establishing resource and finance;
  • The Programme - Key scope and steering group parameters;
  • Monitoring and controlling progress – System documentation and management;


Day 2 – Business Continuity Plan (BCP) Writing

This day will develop and document procedures for creation of a Business Continuity Plan (BCP), in a form that is suitable for use under emergency and major incident conditions. Case study material and a model template plan will be used to illustrate the key points.

It will address all of the related topics and provide delegates with templates, including: -

  • Plan Design & Structure - Examples of alternative Plans and Structures;
  • Key Phases - The milestones on the road to Recovery;
  • Tasks and Responsibilities - Assigning teams and allocating the tasks;
  • Drafting the plan - Data collection techniques and planning tools;
  • The Professional Approach - Overcoming objections, difficulties and delays;
  • Protective Measures – Management and sound security practices;


Day 3 – Business Impact Analysis (BIA) & Risk Assessment (RA)

This day will cover practical techniques for identifying business impacts, analysing their consequences and implementing appropriate, affordable counter-measures. Associated templates will be used to underpin and illustrate the key learning requirements.

It will address all of the related topics, including:

  • The nature of Impacts – Identification of “business-as-usual” and vulnerabilities;
  • Tools & Techniques - Analysis tools;
  • Analysis Strategy - Information sources and investigation methods;
  • Evaluation and Avoidance - Countermeasures to identify, prevent and reduce impacts;


Day 4 – Business Continuity Plan (BCP) Testing & Exercising

This day will provide delegates with an understanding of the tools and techniques required for rehearsing Business Continuity Plans (BCP’s).

It will address all of the related topics and provide delegates with templates, including:

  • Establish a testing & exercising programme – Considering key components and drivers;
  • Design an exercise – The full set of documentation “before, during & after”;
  • Facilitate an exercise – Understanding the needs of your audience;
  • Debrief a test and/or exercise – The key points for carrying out a structured debrief;
  • Report and implement corrective actions – From the test and/or exercise;


Day 5 – Establishment, Maintenance & Updating of Business Continuity Management System (BCMS)

The day will develop the processes & procedures needed to maintain the correctness of Business Continuity capabilities and the documented plan; so that it is always kept in line with business changes.

It will address all of the related topics, including:

  • Plan Maintenance – Ownership of plan. Sensitivity to change, amendment and review;
  • Change Control – Procedures to analyse and reflect changes;
  • Support Tools – The pros and cons of software support tools;
  • Corrective Actions – An integrated approach from the start eases maintenance;
